Cultural Literacy: Aegean, the

My definition – a sea in Greece; often used store owners and restaurateurs to indicate their Greek status

Real definition – from Wikipedia, the Aegean Sea “is an elongated embayment of the Mediterranean Sea located between the Greek and Anatolian peninsulas, i.e., between the mainlands of Greece and Turkey.”

Cultural Literacy: AEC (Atomic Energy Commission)

Real definition – According to Wikipedia, “The United States Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) was an agency of the United States government established after World War II by Congress to foster and control the peacetime development of atomic science and technology.  President Harry S. Truman signed the McMahon/Atomic Energy Act on August 1, 1946, transferring the control of atomic energy from military to civilian hands, effective from January 1, 1947. This shift gave the first members of the AEC complete control of the plants, laboratories, equipment, and personnel assembled during the war to produce the atomic bomb.”  It was dissolved in 1975.

Cultural Literacy: adverb

My definition – a word that describes a verb.  An example would be slowly, gently, or often.

Real definition – according to Merriam-Webster, an adverb is ” a word belonging to one of the major form classes in any of numerous languages, typically serving as a modifier of a verb, an adjective, another adverb, a preposition, a phrase, a clause, or a sentence, expressing some relation of manner or quality, place, time, degree, number, cause, opposition, affirmation, or denial, and in English also serving to connect and to express comment on clause content In “arrived early” the word “early” is an adverb.”

Cultural Literacy: adultery

My definition – adultery is an extra-marital relationship.  While common in some cultures, it is also outlawed by most religions.  For example, one of the Ten Commandments states, “Thou shall not commit adultery.”

Real definiton – from dictionary.com, adultery is “voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and someone other than his or her lawful spouse.”

Cultural Literacy: adrenaline (fight or flight)

My definition – adrenaline is a chemical in the body that surges in response to a threat or stressor.  There have been claims that adrenaline can help women lift entire cars off of their children.

Real definition – according to Wikipedia, “Epinephrine, also known as adrenalin or adrenaline, is a hormone, neurotransmitter and medication.  Epinephrine is normally produced by both the adrenal glands and certain neurons.  It plays an important role in the fight-or-flight response by increasing blood flow to muscles, output of the heart, pupil dilation, and blood sugar.”  Also, adrenalin causing hysterical strength a common anecdote but has not been proven scientifically.

Cultural Literacy: Adrenal Gland

My definition – I know that the adrenal gland is a small gland in the body and that it can really affect energy levels.

Real definition – according to adrenalfatiguesolution.com, the adrenals are two small glands located on the kidneys.  They produce sex hormones and corticosteroids.

Cultural Literacy: Adonis

My definition – a Greek god know for his beauty

Real definition – According to Greek Gods and Goddesses, “Adonis was the god of beauty and desire in Greek mythology.”  He was the son of Myrrha, who tricked her father Theias, king of Syria, into having sex.  He was loved by Aphrodite and Persephone.
